Hi. I’m 36 weeks pregant and a couple of nights ago i woke up with menstrual like cramps along with lower back pain and they lasted all day between 5 and 20 minutes apart. I also had blood tinged discharge and now it’s brown, but today i dont feel any pain. Are these just BH contractions or the real thing?”

If you’re able to type, it’s probably a false alarm! What you may be experiencing is “prodromal labor.” That’s contractions that may feel sharp and strong and like labor contractions, but instead of taking on a regular pattern and becoming more powerful and closer together, as labor contractions do, prodromal-labor contractions start and stop. Even experienced moms-to-be who’ve given birth before may have a hard time telling whether these contractions that occur near their due dates are the “real thing,” because there may be several contractions that are at regular intervals, like you might have three or four minute-long contractions 15 minutes apart, but then nothing for an hour or more. If you’re in doubt, keep track of your contractions by writing down the time when each one
begins. If they stay regular for an hour or more, call your doctor or midwife.
