hello my name is brittany im 33 weeks pregnant and my doctor just told me that my baby looks really small for 33weeks is that normal? or should i be worried about something being wrong with my little girl?”
How scary for your doctor to offer up a vague offhand remark like that!
If your doctor was just feeling your belly and thinking out loud, don’t worry too much: judging a baby’s size from the outside is extremely difficult, even for experienced doctors and midwives. If your doctor was genuinely worried, he should have helped you schedule an ultrasound and possibly other tests to find out more specifically if the baby’s size is within a normal range, or if instead your pregnancy is affected by what’s called intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), which means the baby is smaller than expected. IUGR can be caused by many different things. We suggest calling your doctor, telling him that his “really small” remark has you worried, and asking him to help you schedule an ultrasound to either reassure you that your baby’s growing well or to determine why she might be smaller than average.
