Q. I’m 36 weeks pregnant with my first child and have been suffering from heartburn. People have been telling me that if you have heartburn the baby will have a lot of hair on his or her head. Is this true?
Nope, there’s no relationship between heartburn and your baby’s hair. Pregnancy heartburn happens because the baby is squeezing into your stomach, pushing digestive acids back up.
Hair is a genetic thing—if you and your husband were born with lots of hair, your baby probably will be, too. A darker-haired newborn will also tend to look hairier than a blond baby does, and babies born after their due dates will have longer head hair and thicker brows. It’s also a length-of-gestation thing, premature babies will tend to have less hair, and some very premature babies may not have eyebrows yet.
For heartburn, it can help to keep your stomach from getting too full by eating small meals throughout the day and drinking between meals. Taking a walk after eating will also help your digestion. And (probably needless to say), avoid spicy or acidic foods, like tomato sauce and salsa.
