HI,I AM 42 YEAR OLD,SOON TO BE 43 YEAR OLD.I AM ABOUT 6 WEEK PREGNANT.DO YOU THINK AT MY AGE IS TOO OLD TO BE HAVING BABIES?”
When it comes to fertility and the ability to carry a healthy baby to term, we have all two ages: the one on our diver’s license, and our reproductive age (aka the biological clock). For women, reproductive age is all about the quality and quantity of eggs we have left until menopause. The risk of miscarriage and pregnancy complications goes up as we age, and there’s no precise way to know the condition of anyone’s eggs judging from their calendar age or looks alone. The good news is that plenty of 43-year-old women have carried babies to term, and with every passing day of your pregnancy the risk of miscarriage goes down and the odds of delivering a healthy baby go up. You still do have higher odds of miscarriage and genetic issues with the baby– time and prenatal testing will tell if this pregnancy is meant to be. As your pregnancy progresses, be sure to take your vitamins (especially calcium and magnesium), keep your stress level low, monitor baby kicks and and keep up gentle physical activity– a 30 minute walk every day, but avoid vigorous or strenuous activity.
