If you’re in your third trimester when warm weather hits you may notice that shaving your legs can pose a real challenge, leading you to ask, is it safe to use chemical hair removing creams like Nair(r) and Veet(r) while you’re pregnant?
Unfortunately this is yet another thing where no one really knows for sure, because these creams haven’t been tested for use on pregnant humans. Such a test wouldn’t be ethical, after all. But the main ingredients in these creams, calcium thioglycolate and sodium hydroxide, both do not appear to cause cancer or birth defects in animals, and because the chemical stays on the surface of your skin for a fairly short time it’s unlikely that much of it is absorbed into your body.
However, both chemicals can cause skin irritation, and while you’re pregnant your skin is even more easily irritated than usual. Pregnant or not, if you decide to use these creams do a patch test 24 hours before, and if you experience burning or intense itching wash the cream off immediately. The smell of the creams can also be very off-putting, if you’re sensitive to smells during your pregnancy that’s another reason to skip the chemical depilatory.
