I have all the time this metal taste, like if I am licking a penny coin. What is causing it ? What can I do ? I am 18 wks pregnant with my first child. Thanks!”
Having a sour or metallic taste in your mouth is actually a fairly common pregnancy side effect, believe it or not. It even has a medial name: dysgeusia. During pregnancy it is a side effect of estrogen production, but it may also be caused by a mineral deficiency, so it’s worthwhile to mention it to your care provider and ask if she or she recommends dietary changes or extra mineral supplements in addition to your prenatal vitamin. Not all prenatal vitamins contain the full recommended daily allowances for all minerals. If supplements or dietary changes don’t help, acidic foods might: citrus fruits, pickles or peppers, vinegary salad dressing or lemon drops or lozenges. You may also find that the metallic taste starts to fade as your pregnancy progresses. Many women who’ve experienced it report that it often disappears and/or eases up during the second trimester.
