Pelvic pain (also called Pelvic Girdle Pain, or PGP) in the third trimester is common— about 45% of pregnant women report experiencing it– and it’s caused by the weight of the pregnancy straining your pelvic joints, soft tissues, cartilage and ligaments. Though pelvic pain can be very unpleasant and acute, isn’t a sign that there is any problem with your pregnancy, unless you also have symptoms of pre-term labor (the pain gets progressively stronger and happens in rhythmic intervals, and comes with a tightening sensation across your belly). If that’s the case, notify your doctor right away. For regular pelvic pain, though, cope by doing your best to reduce stress on the pelvic joint. Avoid any movement with your knees apart, and practice getting in and out of beds, cars, sofas and chairs while keeping your knees together and using your arms for support.
