How and When Should You Announce Pregnancy To Your Boss?

Marcie Jones Leave a Comment

Q. I am 14 weeks. I just got a store Manager position at my work. I haven’t told my boss b/c she would have not given it to me.  Any tips on making it go smoother?”

It’s against the law to deny someone a promotion or demote her just because she’s pregnant (not that it doesn’t happen all the time), and okay to keep pregnancy news to yourself. Don’t lie to your boss, but don’t feel like you have to let her in on your pregnancy until there’s a specific reason she needs to know. Eventually it will come up—you’ll need to talk specifics about Christmas schedules, have to explain multiple doctors’ appointments, or your bump will start to show. When that happens, tell the truth in a matter-of-fact way: “I probably won’t be able to work 80 hours a week this Christmas season because I’m expecting and due December 20th, but I will do my best to help you fill the schedule and find someone to cover my duties until I return from maternity leave.”
