You may have never heard of turmeric, but it’s a root in the ginger family, sold as a powdered spice in stores. It’s what gives curry a bright yellow flavor, and has been used in India for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine and to balance the flavor of dishes. It’s high in iron, one tablespoon has 15% of your recommended daily supply. Recent research has also shown that certain compounds in it called curcuminoids do actually have anti-inflammatory properties, and that it’s completely safe to consume, even in high doses while you’re pregnant (though high-dose turmeric supplements are not recommended). Peppercorns contain curcuminoids too.
So if you’re feeling bloated or achy in your joints and muscles, pick some up and try adding it to recipes, including:
- Curry
- Mango popsicles or smoothies
- Salad dressing
- Macaroni and cheese
