You’ve packed your bag for the hospital, and here are a few other last-minute things to consider putting on your to-do list before labor begins:

  • Baby’s first laundry. When you and baby come home from the hospital, it’ll be one less thing to do if sheets and clothes have already been unwrapped, untagged and laundered in hot water.
  • The car seat. Gotta have one — it’s the law in all states and most hospitals won’t let you drive away with a newborn until someone checks that you have one safely installed. Getting it put in properly with the straps and headrest in the right position can be a bit of a pain, so it’s good to get it over with before home-from-the-hospital day.
  • Household goods. You know you’ll need plenty of newborn-size diapers and wipes on hand, but its also handy to stock up on other dry goods, like envelopes, stamps, trash bags, paper towels, facial and toilet tissue and pet foods.
  • Benefit details.  No fun, but if you have health insurance, it’s a good idea to call and ask your company when and how to add your baby onto your plan, and ask what’s covered for your birth and how much you will be expected to pay out of pocket.
  • Neighbor support. Ask someone to bring in your mail and care for your pets while you’re in the hospital, so your partner can stay with you. Consider signing up for online bill paying services so you won’t have to shuffle through mounds of mail.
  • Pesky paperwork. Fill out hospital admission forms in advance, and ask your doctor for duplicates of your medical records and your birth plan to cut down the n ???
