Ok so I know that my crib mattress should have at least 150 coils but that’s about it. My husband’s grandparents want to pay for our crib mattress but I don’t know which one to pick out. Obviously I want to get a good one for their money. But I don’t want to pick out a really expensive one because they are the ones paying for it, not us. They said they aren’t worried about price but I am. So what is the best mattress for the money? Please help!!”

The good news is that you (or the baby’s great-grandparents) don’t have to spend a lot for a quality mattress. Sure, quality is nice, but all crib mattresses have to meet certain safety and materials standards. There are basically two kinds of mattresses — innerspring versions that are made with a metal frame with metal springs inside and mattresses made from dense foam. Either type of mattress will be fine for your baby as long as it’s extra-firm. The test is to squeeze the front and back between your palms. It should feel almost as hard as a brick. Your baby’s body is very flexible, and he won’t need lots of springs to support his body like we grown-ups do.

Foam mattresses have several advantages: they’re less likely to cause allergic reactions, and they also tend to be lightweight and flexible, which makes changing crib sheets much easier. Look for a thick, quality covering (ticking), sturdy binding on all sides, and venting on the sides or ends to allow the inside of the mattress to be ventilated. And remember that all babies should be placed to sleep on their backs, with no pillows, crib bumpers or toys in the crib, to help reduce the risk of SIDS.

  1. The most important thing to be looked for while buying a new mattress is the comfort. Comfort is the first thing that we expect from a mattress and a mattress can be said good only if it provides proper comfort. For extra comfort, we can use a Crib Mattress Protector.
