I am 21 weeks. I am still so tired and feel out of breath quite easily. Sometimes it feels like my heart is beating really hard and fast. The Dr. said it is probably from the extra weight but I have not gained any weight at all so far. I was 180 pounds before I got pregnant and now I weight 170. This is my fourth baby and I did not feel this way with the other three. Could something be wrong with me or is this normal?”

Frankly, it doesn’t sound like your doctor is listening to you well.

A fast heartbeat, tiredness and frequently being out of breath could all indicate a thyroid imbalance, blood pressure issues or anemia. If your doctor hasn’t checked your iron and thyroid (also known as your T4 and T3) levels and blood pressure lately, request that he or she does do that. If he or she has checked these and everything’s within a healthy range, the heavy breathing and lack of weight gain could be two different things- the heavy breathing could be the baby starting to press into your heart and lungs or simply being older and in not as good of shape. And a lack of weight gain could be from nausea or simply cutting out the beer and soda in your diet. Most women’s weight gain really starts picking up in the second half of pregnancy, so it’s generally not a problem if you have gained little or not much by now as long as you have been able to keep up eating healthy foods regularly.

Whatever it is, pick up the phone now and call your doctor’s office. Talk to your doctor about your concerns with your lack of breathing and feeling differently. If you feel alarmed enough that you want an ultrasound to make sure that your baby is okay, tell him or her that. Keep a food journal if you are worried about weight gain and try to estimate your calorie intake. You need at least 2,200 a day now, make sure that your calories are coming from vegetables, grains, nuts fruits, lean means and other healthy foods.
