Pubic Bone Pain and Pregnancy

Marcie Jones Leave a Comment

I just want to know why my pubic bone and area is hurting, especially when I get up from lying down or sitting down. Is it just my muscles stretching or what?”

Pubic bone pain during pregnancy has a long, and complicated name: “Pubic Symphysis Diastasis.” It’s quite common during pregnancy. And sometimes it can stick around after birth, too. During the last trimester of pregnancy, a hormone called relaxin causes the connective tissues that hold the pubic bone together to soften, allowing the bones to spread apart in preparation for birth. And sometimes it happens even earlier during pregnancy. If you’re nearing your due date, chances are your baby is moving down deeper into your pelvis, which causes the pain to get worse, especially when you walk, stand or spread your legs apart to put on pants or step into the bathtub. You may find that sitting down first to get dressed on enter the tub will help, as will staying off your feet, or applying moist heat to where it hurts. Some moms-to-be find that wearing a belly band to support some of the weight can offer temporary help, too. Your healthcare provider may suggest some pregnancy-safe pain relievers to get you through. Just be sure to follow dosing instructions carefully.
