Is it safe to be flying when you are almost 35 weeks? I am supposed to be in a
wedding but my doctor does not recommend flying after 32 weeks, even though the airlines allow you to fly up to 36 weeks. Am I wrong to be telling the bride I can’t come?”

We would vote for following your doctor’s advice. Flying in an airplane with a pressurized cabin is actually very safe, and chances are excellent that nothing at all would go wrong if you took this trip. But, sometimes, rarely, women do go into labor early or develop complications in late pregnancy that require monitoring, bed rest or medical intervention. And should something like that happen, for instance you develop high blood pressure or begin to have contractions, you’d find yourself in an unfamiliar city, possibly unable to travel, having to be treated by physicians you don’t know. Not to mention you’d have to let the bride down if she was counting on you to play a role in the wedding. There’s also the much-more-likely scenario of an airport delay, which will be made all the more aggravating if you’re experiencing the back and hip pain, sleep disturbances and constant bathroom trips. Plus, depending on how long your flight is, at 35 weeks extended sitting may be seriously uncomfortable. We say, stay home and send a gift.
