What Goes In a Diaper Bag?

Marcie Jones Leave a Comment

Scared you’ll forget something? Here’s a quick checklist of what to keep in your diaper bag for your 7-12 month-old baby so you’ll be prepared for anything.

What goes in a diaper bag? A lot, as it turns out. Babies can spit up, fill a diaper or demand to eat or drink at unpredictable times, so as experienced parents well know, it pays to stay stocked. It’s also a good idea to keep some backup supplies in your car and stroller, so you don’t have to pack and lug a giant bag for every walk around the block or errand.

For a diaper bag, to carry for trips longer than an hour:

  • Diapers – aim to keep at least three on hand
  • Wipes- at least 12 in a travel pack, travel case or zippered plastic bag
  • Portable changing pad or disposable changing-pad cover
  • 2-3 sheets of paper towels for spills or spit-ups
  • Travel-pack tissues
  • Sippy cup, or you’re still nursing, breast pads
  • If you’re formula-feeding,
  • An 8-ounce bottle with nipple, ring and cap,
  • measured formula
  • bottle of water
  • hand sanitizer
  • change of baby clothes: shirt, pants, socks, shoes, jacket.
  • optional: diaper cream, medications, sunblock, pacifiers, child safety harness, hats, sunglasses, extra clothing layer for yourself, mini umbrella

If you’ll be dining out:

  • Portable placemat for tabletop
  • Age-appropriate appetizer (try Cheerios, puffs, rice crackers)
  • One or two small toys, a few crayons and paper or coloring book

For the car and stroller:

  • 1-2 extra diapers
  • 1-2 wipes
  • travel pack of tissues
  • Sippy cup of water
