I am pregnant with my 5th child and I am now a week past my due date. I have tried everything I could possibly think of to start contracting but it seems my baby girl does not want to come out yet. My doctor says they don’t want to induce me. Is this normal and do you have any tricks to startup my contractions……….?”

After 41 weeks most doctors and midwives will urge induction, because the placenta begins to develop mineral deposits and at some point may begin to shut down. Should that happen it can get dangerous for the baby quickly and with little warning.  If your doctor doesn’t want to induce you after 42 weeks’ gestation, he or she should check you into the hospital so the placenta and baby can be monitored continually. If your health care provider balks at this, get another opinion.

In the meantime, staying active and upright by taking lots of walks can help, and here’s a list of techniques for jump-starting labor that may or may not work (but are worth a try).
