when can i have sex? I am one month pregnant.”

Most of the time while you’re pregnant sex is safe, but not always.

In most cases sexual activity while you’re pregnant, including intercourse, is safe from conception all the way until your water breaks. There are a few exceptions, and if they apply to you, ask your health care provider first:

  • You’re in late pregnancy and you have a history of preterm labor
  • You have placenta previa (the placenta is covering the cervix)
  • You have cervical insufficiency (also known as an ‘incompetent cervix’)
  • You’re being treated for a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis (ask your doctor how long during and after treatment you should abstain)
  • You are experiencing vaginal or pelvic pain or bleeding
  • Your water has broken
  • Your partner has a sexually transmitted infection, or is being treated for one
  • or

  • your health care has told you to avoid sexual activity. If your health care provider does tell you to avoid sex for a medical reason, ask specifically what activities are off limits and for how long- is it the worry that uterine contractions from orgasm might induce labor prematurely, or concern about an infection that would mean you should avoid other kinds of contact?
