When is a Car Trip Safe for a Baby?

Marcie Jones Leave a Comment

Q. At what age is it safe to travel in the car with my newborn? My husband lives in another state and I wanted to spend some of my leave time by him.”

We recommend taking a friend or family member along with you. If you’ve had a
cesarean section, your doctor will tell you not to drive for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. Even with an uncomplicated birth your energy stores will be seriously depleted for several months following birth. Add severe sleep deprivation caused by waking up to feed your baby 3 or 4 times a night, and you may find yourself too tired to do much driving. Whenever you’re on the road, your baby will need to be strapped into a rear-facing car seat in the backseat of the car. Carefully follow the instructions for how to install it that came with the seat as well as those in your car owner’s manual. And don’t take your baby out to feed, soothe or diaper her when the car is in motion. A crying baby can be a serious distraction- allow time for plenty of rest stops.
