Is it Normal to Feel Gassy all the Time?

Marcie Jones 1 Comment

I am wondering if gassiness is a normal thing early on in pregnancy???”

Gassiness, with or without constipation, feeling bloated, heartburn and/or having stretching sensations in your belly are really common symptoms throughout pregnancy. They come from the pressure being put on your intestines by your growing baby combined with the effects of hormones altering your internal chemistry, loosening up your stomach and slowing down your digestion.

Also, some foods will cause more gas than others for certain people. Dairy products are common offenders, as are cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. If this seems to be the case for you try an enzyme-based supplement such as Beano(r), which is food-based and totally safe to use during pregnancy and nursing. You might also find you have gassy reactions to fatty and fried foods.

If your gas is extreme, keep a food journal for a couple of days to see if you can figure out which food or foods might be the culprit. Another thing that can help is to try (balanced) snacking throughout the day, rather than having two or three large meals- try handful of almonds here, bowl of soup there, toast and peanut butter, half a sandwich, an apple.
