Hi, I am 30 weeks pregnant right now and i wanted to know until what time is it safe to travel? I know that the doctors urge you to stay close to home after 36 weeks but can you go for long drives (5-6 hrs) up to 36 weeks?”

The concern when it comes to traveling during late pregnancy is the risk of complications or going into labor in a strange city and having to give birth with a care provider you’ve never met before.

That said, ask your care provider to give you advice on some what-ifs: what to do if your water breaks, strong contractions start or you have questions or concerns while you’re away.

It’s also a good idea to get a copy of your medical records from your doctor or midwife to keep with you. Keep in mind, too, that most labors take more than 5 to 6 hours, so you’ll probably have plenty of warning before you actually give birth (but riding in a car while in labor is not a pleasant experience).

Also you’ll find as pregnancy goes along, sitting in the same position for a long time will get increasingly uncomfortable. Plan to take stretch and rest breaks at least every hour to reduce the risk of muscle cramps and circulation problems.
